| My story is quite simple
and common. I have lived a life of both achievement and failure;
both personal and vocational. And through it all I've spent countless hours pondering the meaning of our existence and dabbling in this thing we call faith. I've attended church off and on for most of my life. And I've always known in my heart that Jesus Christ was the kind of person we should all try to be. Nonetheless, for many years my faith inevitably felt a little forced - all effort and not enough substance. And then, on my way out for bagels one Sunday morning more than a decade ago I stopped in at one of those massive seeker-friendly churches that have popped up in suburbs across the country over the last two decades. On this particular Sunday morning a young, casually dressed pastor was showing video of himself jumping out of an airplane. As the camera zoomed in his face, a picture of sheer terror came into focus. And then he jumped. His message was all about letting go. You cannot will your faith, he explained. Mental discipline will not get you there. Instead, you have to let go. You have to trust. You have to be open to God's presence. He's already in your heart. You just have to allow your brain to accept His being there. The rest, as they say, is history. I've been walking with God ever since. And oh what a journey it's been. It's a journey that has brought me to Beijing, China, where I have lived and worked since August, 2007. It's been an incredible experience that has allowed me to witness history in the making and to put into practice that which I tried to help others realize through my two books - the seamless integration of faith and vocation.
